The Flu has invaded my home
My son, Dakota, went to visit his “other dad” over the long Labor Day weekend.
He came home Monday, and was complaining of a really bad headache and that his belly was hurting. Later that night, he had a fever of 100.4. Around 4 am, he was throwing up.
I’m not completely stupid, I won’t send my child to school knowing he has a fever. I know some people do this, and that’s why illness spreads through schools and why your child goes to school healthy and comes home sick. I wasn’t going to send mine to school knowing he has a fever and not knowing what’s wrong with him.
I made a doctor’s appointment as soon as they opened. While at the doctor, I was informed by the “other dad’s” girlfriend that her 13 year old daughter was really sick and had been seen by a doctor and was told she has the flu. NICE. My son was at their home all weekend with a teen that had the flu.
The doctor said it was probably just a viral infection, but tested for the flu. Guess what??? Dakota has the flu!The doctor said he can’t test the type of flu it is in his office, but that Dakota more than likely has H1N1 flu.
To get Dakota well, and to try to prevent everyone else in the house from getting the flu, he prescribed us all Tamiflu. It would be really hard on Brookelyn, my two year old if she got this nasty flu, and if my husband got it, he would have to miss work. So I’m really glad the doctor treated us all.
Here’s some warning signs to look for:
In children, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Fast breathing or trouble breathing
- Bluish or gray skin color
- Not drinking enough fluids
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Not waking up or not interacting
- Being so irritable that the child does not want to be held
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
In adults, emergency warning signs that need urgent medical attention include:
- Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
- Pain or pressure in the chest or abdomen
- Sudden dizziness
- Confusion
- Severe or persistent vomiting
- Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
If you want more information about the H1N1 flu, visit the Government site http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/qa.htm.
Dakota still had a fever last night, I gave him the Tamiflu, he went to bed. He woke up without a fever, so it must be helping! He gets to stay home from school ALL week though, so he has plenty of time to get well without affecting the public.

There is some info I just found recently that states Vitamin D can help with the flu! But have also read if we supplement Vit. D to be sure and have levels checked periodically so as not to overdose on it. I just need to get out in the sun more!
